Great Ways to Add a Personal Touch to a Child’s Bedroom

The bedroom is the place where people retire after a long day.  It’s a place of comfort, warmth, and security for both adults and children. Kids hibernate in their bedrooms because it is the only area in the house that they can call their own. They can shut the door and turn their space into a magical kingdom where they live-out their fantasies -ruling as little kings and queens. As children grow, they go through many phases. They like something new every year; one year its pink and Barbie, the next year they love orange and sports (and of course, hate pink and Barbie!). Children love to express themselves and customize their bedrooms to suit their new passions. They design their room from scratch to make it more personal and take pride in knowing that none of their friends have bedrooms like theirs.

While you, the parent, leave the decorating up to the child, it is important to child-proof it for safety. Make sure that all the things to be placed in the child’s bedroom are child-friendly.  Spending time to look for the main items, such as the bed, the curtains, and the ceiling fans, will help create a bond between the parents and the child.  Ask your child to participate in the decision-making. Ask them questions on what color to use and what style of furniture to buy. A good trick is to let them choose between two alternatives that you already agree with. This will make your child feel like it is their decision and in turn, they will like their room better.

Some great ways to add personal touches to a bedroom include attaching some drawings or paintings made by the child on a wall.  For extraordinary works, framing them and displaying them could be a great idea. In the example above, your child’s new fascination is sports. Adding sports ceiling fans to the bedrooms can make a big difference. It is a semi-permanent part of the room like painting the walls. Plus there are many different kids ceiling fans to choose from, so you can find one that both you and your child like.

Another great way to add a personal touch is by putting the child’s name or the first letter of his or her name on the door or on the wall.  Next to it, there could be a framed picture.  This creates a more intimate and personal space for the child.  Many studies have shown that children like to stay in rooms that are inviting and comfortable.  Adding personal touches will make the bedroom more inviting and homey at the same time.

Children are most likely to appreciate rooms that have a personal feeling to it.  The personal touches do not have to be expensive. The effort that is put into the personal touches is what counts.  Make the bedroom inviting, to give the child a sense of security, warmth, and love.  Let the child help make decisions to make it a more fruitful and exciting experience for him or her.  When the room is finally done, the child will love that they made their mark.
